used Laserdisc player - question...

Using Mozilla/4.07 [en] (Win95; I):
After over a year with my DVD player,
I decided to buy a used Laserdisc player. Now i'm not sure if my disappointment with the picture quality is due to having gotten so used to DVD's, or because there is something wrong with the player. The blacks are not deep at all, looks like only slightly better than VHS. Could the lens be dirty? Could it be a more serious problem??
