1st 2nd 3rd and 4th Generation DVD?

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 98):

What makes DVD players 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th generation? I am planning on getting the Pioneer 414 but i heard its 3rd generation, not 4th. is this because it doesn't have built in AC3? thanks
