sony wega: xbr or not?

I faced the same question. I went with the XBR because I managed to get a good deal on it ($2800). I do not regret the decision, even though it was still a $1000 more than V-series. Most noteably, you are paying for better comb filter (not necessary for DVD, but for LD since LD will almost certainly have inferior comb filter), and improved sound. So, if you watch a great deal of broadcast or cable TV, a good comb filter will be helpful. However, cable broadcasts are typically so poor that the added benefit may well be a moot point. If you do use DSS or the like, and you use S-video inputs, once again comb filter is by-passed. I was surprised to find out how much I actually enjoyed the XBR internal sound improvements. These are quite good for those times when you just don't feel like having you amps on, or it is late at night and you don't need HUGE sound. Hell, I can play the TV loud enough that the girlfriend still complains, and it isn't even turned up half of max. Also, many older (70's -80's) movies have only stereo soundtracks, and these aren't often worth the effort expended by having to get up to turn the amps/pre-amps on. Those beefed up XBR amps will come in handy in these instances. Sony is also supposed to have built the XBR lines with better quality components. You may not see this when comparing side by side, but durability is not something that can be sampled. IF you can go it, do the XBR w/o an extended warranty.
