Looking for Comments on Sony 36XBR200 WEGA

Posted by Denis W. Repke [IP: 206.175.197.125] on December 29, 1998 at 22:39:31:

After 11 years, my Sony 25XBR is finally going -- I'm losing more-and-more shadow detail every day. I've been VERY satisfied with this set and was hoping to keep it a few more years, but I can't wait much longer. It's getting much too difficult to tell what's happening in "dark" scenes. So I've starting looking for a replacement.

I'm in a condo and only have about an 8 ft viewing distance where my TV goes. I'm still leaning toward a 36". Most of my system is SONY (including my receiver and two VCRs) so I am strongly leaning toward a SONY TV to retain automatic connection to my other Sony components. I don't have a DVD yet, but will in the not-too-distant future.

I really want to go with the Sony 36XBR200 WEGA but I'm having a difficult time convincing myself that it is worth its high cost. On the demo I've seen, it looks great for text and with DVDs, BUT I haven't been overly thrilled with the "apparent" quality of broadcast and cable programs (and DSS) programs on this set. And I am primarily interested in the quality of cable and broadcast TV programs -- although I will eventually use some DVDs.

I'd greatly appreciate any comments (pro and con) about the 36XBR200, particularly with cable and broadcast TV programs. Is this set worth its cost? I MAY also consider the Toshiba Cinema series, although I would really like to stick with Sony because of my other Sony components (I'm also a little concerned about some of the "moire" problems mentioned for the Toshiba sets).
