DVD-A110 Audio Output Settings

Posted by Jim Dare [IP: 209.63.94.3] on December 30, 1998 at 11:53:22:

I have a Panasonic DVD-A110 hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V2095 A/V receiver.

My A110 operating manual says, "To enjoy high quality sound at 48 kHz/20 bit/24 bit or 96 kHz, connect the amplifier or decoder directly to the audio output connectors, not to the digital audio output connector. Select "Off" at the LPCM (DVD)." It says for reasons of copyright protection, during playback of a DVD recorded in linear PCM of 48 kHz/20 bit/24 bit or 96 kHz, the digital audio is converted to 48 kHz/16 bit output. Anyone know the answers to the following questions?

1. Are CDs recorded in 48 kHz/20 bit/24 bit or 96 kHz and, if so, does the A110 convert their digital audio output to 48 kHz?

2. How can I tell when a DVD (or CD) is recorded at 48 kHz/20 bit/24 bit or 98 kHz? That is, how will I know when to use the regular audio output instead of the digital audio output?

3. Since the regular audio output (not the digital audio output) of the A110 does not convert signals to 48 kHz, what would be the disadvantage of simply using the regular audio output all the time?

Thanks for any insights anyone can offer.
