Recommendations for new bigscreen TV

Using Mozilla/4.04 [en] (WinNT; U):

I am in the market for a new TV, preferably widescreen/16:9, at least 50 inches. I've had a 32" Sony XBR direct-view set for years, but now I want something bigger for movies. It does not necessarily have to be HDTV ready - I don't think we're going to see much source material for several years. What's more important to me is the ability to get a bright, crisp picture from different angles or seating positions. Rear-projection sets have come a long way, but some still seem dark when you move a few feet from center.

Associated equipment would be a Sony 7700 DVD player and Mitsubishi Hi-Fi VCR. The TV would also be connected to my home theater rig, so I don't need fancy audio features on the TV itself. I'd like to spend no more than $5k. Any suggestions? Thanks.
