Recommendations for new bigscreen TV

I love sports. At first my tv will be connected to cable and my vcr. After that I would like to get Direct TV for football and hockey. I love to channel surf and watch sitcoms. I really know nothing about 16:9 or 4:3. I don't know if I should be concerned with HDTV. How much does it cost to have a set calibrated? Better yet, what is calibrating. Is that just setting up the Tv's colors??
