Halo Problem with Sony 53XBR48 PRTV (last year's)

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows NT):

For some time now, I have noticed a slight problem with my SONY 53" XBR RPTV. At the top of the screen (say the upper 1-1-1/2"), there is a horizontal band of brightness or a halo that is visible in dark scenes. Also, as credits roll off at the end of a movie, there is a noticeable flash or local burst of brightness that occurs just after a text block exits the frame at the top of the screen. Actually, any relatively bright object that happens to reside close to the top of the frame will cause a localized burst of brightness for however long the image stays at this sensitive location. This is in addition to the horizontal band that is most likely always present (just noticeable in dark frames -- especiall with a letterbox source).

I had a service tech visit. He merely cleaned the mirror, CRT's, and screen. The problem did improve somewhat, especially the ever-present horizontal band of brightness at the top 1-1-1/2" of screen. However, I can still notice it in dark scenes (with the room relatively dark), so it is still there. Also, the residual bright bursts still occur as the credits roll off the screen. Obviously, the cleaning of the dust on the CTR's has helped, but not eliminated the problem. As I suspected, the dust only made the problem more noticeable.

Has anyone else ever heard of such a problem?

I don't think RPTV's are supposed to have flare-ups as text roll of the screen. I am not sure if my set is really malfunctioning or not. The repair tech said he knew of nothing he could adjust or replace to stop that type of thing.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated in this regard. I do have a lemon clause in my extended warranty, so I would very much like to determine if my set is truely malfuctioning before the contract expires in 10 months!!!

THanks,

KJ
