Help! Japan DVD player won't play on USA TV

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (WinNT; U):
I just purchased a Japanese model DVD player which is NTSC. But when I tried to play a DVD disk or VCD disk, all I get is sound, there are absolutely
no video. In fact, as I understand it, even when there is no disk in the player , the manufacturer logo should still show, right? Is there any difference
between Japan's NTSC and USA NTSC? I tried different TVs, using composite and S-video out, same results. Please help.
