The setup funstion of the 550 allows you to switch the audio options. turn off the digital output and select a pro logic surround option.

The DVD cannot go through the VCR in most cases because of copy protection. You can get an RF modulator at Radio Shack for $30. make sure you get the new model that has stereo inputs even though you will not use them with the receiver. It has other features such as an input for your cable and VCR along with auto on/off features with no manual video switching necessary. Same price as clumsy older unit.
