Hitachi TVs - any good?

I have a 50" Ultravision that is about 2 years old. The picture quality is still excellent. IMO, it is as good or better than Mitsubishi.

However, it did experience a board failure which would have been very expensive had I not also purchased a service contract. They had to come and get the set to fix it.

How cheap is cheap and how old are these sets? Can you buy an extended warranty/service policy at reasonable cost? IMO, because these sets are so expensive to service, one should have this, new or used. In general, I don't purchase extended warranties but I did in this case and am glad I did--the repair would have cost over $400.
