Only DVD player with 2 discrete lasers can play CDR in any reliable fashion. Sometime a single laser can play a CDR just out of luck. DVD player has better luck playing CDRW. The wavelenght for the laser to read CD and DVD is different. When you have two lasers, each can be optimized to read each media. Sony has a few models with dual discrete laser pickup.
