Panasonic 50" 16x9 Problem, DVD Viewing Posted by Allan [IP: 157.123.138.60] on January 06, 1999 at 11:46:05: In Reply to: Panasonic 50 posted by Richard Blanco, Jr. on December 29, 1998 at 01:41:37: Since I don't own a 16:9 TV I can only generalize. The aspect ratio choices, usually three on the player, three on the TV, are pretty much standard but unfortunately they are named differently on different brands of TV sets and DVD players. The way I tell people, you set the DVD player to "normal" mode and you set the TV to 16:9 or "stretch" mode to view enhanced or anamorphic DVD's. Since what I call "normal" mode is also used for the 4:3 program DVD and the non-enhanced letterbox DVD, I am not sure which player mode the name "16:9" applies to. The other two modes on the player, which I think of as "letterbox" and "side crop", reprocess the video frame which you don't want. (They are meant only for 4:3 TV's.) You don't want the "zoom" mode on the TV for enhanced movies but you do use it for non-enhanced letterboxed movies. It treats the video frame as 4:3 and puts the top and bottom edges outside the screen boundaries. If you are trying things out, the "stretch" mode on the TV makes everything in a TV broadcast fat and squatty looking. I think the mode you referred to as "panorama" is the stretch mode. The "4:3" and "zoom" modes keep the proportions correct for a 4:3 program. A few DVD's may cause the player to jump into a particular mode but you should be able to change the mode later to whichever you want. You may have to press the stop button before changing modes.
