Sony MPD-600 laser disc player

My laser disc player has an optical digital output but does not have a RF digital output. Am I correct to understand that I will not be able to output DD without upgrading my LD? If this is true, could someone explain the purpose of my digital output...

I just added a DD decoder to my set-up, (yes, I'm behind...) and I've noticed many of my LD's include ac-3. (haven't purchased a LD in a year and a half)

Second, is this player worth upgrading or am a better off buying a new one with RF built in?
