According to my dealer, the Pioneer and all the Theta products pass 24/96 out the digital outputs and the analog outputs. Also, he says that the Sony players do not pass 24/96 out the digital outs but do out the analog. Unfortunately, once you connect it to most HT preamps, they will reconvert to digital and then back to analog using non 24/96 processing. Just for completeness, he also said that all the players based on the Matshusta (hope that's spelled right!) designs act the same way that the sony does. This includes Toshiba.

I can't say definitely this is true though I trust him completely. He sells Sony, Theta, and Pioneer so he has no reason to lie. Especially since he could have made a bigger sale with the Sony pieces. The Pioneer had the features I wanted, superior connection options, and a better price. Tough combination to beat in my mind.

The 24/96 digital output is one of the reasons I bought the 414. I recently attended an audition of new 24/96 DADs from Classic Records and the difference between standard CDs and 24/96 DADs on the same setup was not small. Much more spatial information, ease in the top frequencies, smoothness in the bass, etc. And yes, the recordings were made from the same master tapes, levels were the same, etc. Hey, if you have a processor that will decode the 24/96, why not buy a piece that will pass it.
