In addition to the good informatio Brian has posted, let me fill you in on the function of the digital output on your Sony LD player. This output allows you to make a direct digital dub to a digital recorder such as MD or DAT. Also it allows you to install an outboard DAC to upgrade the sound quality. Funny part is that the optical cable format is terrible for interfacing with an outboard DAC! Okay let's just leave it at the first point I made!
