DVD purchase decisions... I need lots of help

Posted by Jacob Bills [IP: 204.210.181.91] on January 31, 1999 at 00:18:21:

Hi all,

After countless weeks of searching the internet, I have found myself no further then when I began. So I decided to turn to the forums and get some group help.

Here's my situation...
I'm looking to buy a DVD player for my parent's 25th anniversary that is in the price range of $599 or below. At the moment, we have a Pro Logic Receiver and only composite connections. With any luck, getting this new DVD will force my parents to upgrade both the audio and video.

At the moment, it's a toss up between the following...
Toshiba SD-3108
Panasonic A-310 or A-110 (not sure which is better)
Sony DVP-S7000 or Sony DVP-S500 (again not sure which is better for the price)
Pioneer 414

As you can see I have a huge task ahead of me in terms of deciding. If anyone can sway me in any direction, please go right ahead. I was hoping to get atleast S-video and component (is it necessary?), while also DD decoder and DTS (also is it needed if I have DD?) on the DVD I chose.

However with the conflicting reviews I read about each, I don't know where to turn. Please enlighten me and share your knowledge.

Finally, if anyone can direct me to stores or websites that I can order from please do and if you have prices, they are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

-Jacob Bills-

PS - Are there any upcoming DVD players around the end of February, that I should wait for because they are that much better than current ones?
