Even considering all of the above discussion, I would still rather go through the D to A process only once. Even if the player downconverts to 16/48, there is bound to be additional information revealed/retrieved that may be lost in yet another encode/decode process. I believe in the KISS principle. Mess with the signal as little as possible and you'll get closer to the original recording. That is part of the reason I rarely use any of the ambience recovery modes to make the music sound "better." If you have ever heard any original master tapes on a really good system from simple 2 mic setups, you know what I mean. Just my opinion.
