Since there is no analog bypass, the unit will redigitatize the input signal to whatever the unit uses, process it, then reconvert it to analog. Even considering all of the above discussion, I would still rather go through the D to A process only once. Even if the player downconverts to 16/48, there is bound to be additional information revealed/retrieved that may be lost in yet another encode/decode process.

I believe in the KISS principle. Mess with the signal as little as possible and you'll get closer to the original recording. That is part of the reason I rarely use any of the ambience recovery modes to make the music sound "better." If you have ever heard any original master tapes on a really good system from simple 2 mic setups, you know what I mean.

Just my opinion.
