DVD purchase decisions... I need lots of help

These are good choices. If you have a DD receiver I wouldn't spend the extra money for the built in DD-decoder unless the features are what is swaying you on the player. Also, if you buy a receiver with DTS you only need a DVD player that passes the DTS signal. I believe we will be seeing DTS decoders built in to the DVD players soon! If you plan on talking the parents into a HDTV then you might want to consider waiting for the new DVD technology (Progressive scan). Not sure about the Pioneer 414 though. You might want to read the digitaltheater.com forum and see what they have found with this player. I have the Panasonic A310 and haven't had any problems. The Sony models seem to be very strong in the no problems found area. Anyway you look at it, I think every player out there has had problems listed on this forum or others. As far as S-video and component go, (depending on the tv, direct view in my case) you won't be able to tell a difference between the two. Hope I helped and didn't discourage.
