I'd have to lean toward the 110 on this one...I own this unit and chose it over the 414 among others, it does everything the 414 does, but without component outs, and without any possibility of glitches, superb pic. quality (using S-video) and simple, remote (buttons should be a little bigger, only complaint) and again, no real playback problems have been associated with this player; surprisingly trouble free considering that DVD is still evolving.

You don't need component outs unless you have a TV with appropriate inputs right NOW, otherwise, you'll be upgrading the DVD player when you get something with component inputs anyway (most likely progressive scan component ins on a future HDTV set, so everyone with component video DVD will be upgrading anyway!)

Right now, for the money I'll recommend the 110 for your purpose, it'll make a great gift, a nice "welcome to DVD world" :) (110 owners know where I get that line!)
