I had the pioneer 414 and the sony s300 at home to compare.

Picture quality is comparable, but would give the nod to the sony for CD audio.
The sony was a heavier and sturdier unit by far.

The menus are better on the sony. Sony remote is very good.
The remote on the pioneer is poorly laid out with very small buttons and i thought the menu system was harder to use than the sony.

When u hit the stop button when playing a dvd, the sony will automatically save your position on the disk, on the pio u must press the save memo function, not stop. I have hit stop on the pio by mistake and lost my place, so I like the sony feature. Also the save memo did not always work on some movies, but did work on the sony (don’t understand that one).

When advancing to next chapter the sony is quicker and will keep accepting a rapid button click, the pio is choppy and u must wait
until the next chapter starts before u can click again.

Those may be minor, but I found them annoying.
I hear much praise for the pio on the forums, and I thought so too(had the pio home before the sony, so I did not know any better), until I started using the sony.
Of course the sony is $89 more and is lacking dts (so what at this point) and does not have component outs( I cant tell the diff)

But I know sony(and others) is coming out with new models in march, which may address dts and component out at less money than current units. It may pay to wait just a little longer.

Hope this helps, Rich
