A/V Receiver?

If possible, just use a set of audio outputs from your TV to the receiver.
With luck you also will not have to adjust the volume anymore (My TV has two audio outputs, one tied to the TV volume and one at line level.)

If you want surround sound now, however, definitely look at Yamaha, Rotel, and Denon in that price range. I don't think any will do your component video switching, but I'm sure they all have macro-programmable remotes so you'll end up with a one-button operation to switch from TV to VCR to DVD, the macro takes care of all the other things like selecting the proper channel on the TV, select the proper input on the receiver, dim the lights, put the popcorn in the microwave...OK, so you'll need to add a couple "extras" for the last two but you get the idea.
