DIVX's Failure Can Be Your Gain

Posted by Bob Lowell [IP: 207.212.95.183] on June 30, 1999 at 09:26:46
Using Mozilla/4.04 [en]C-PBI-NC404 (Win95; U):

I just purchased a PROSCAN PS8680Z
DVD player from Circuit City.

It's a nice model. Good features. Small size.

And the price had recently dropped from $449 to $329.

When Circuit City wrote DIVX off, they discounted the DIVX-compatible DVD players they had not sold. At least that's true of some of them.

There are two explanations for this situation. I think the latter is the true one. But I'm not sure.

One is that Circuit City was promising o return $100 checks to anyone who purchased a DIVX player before a certain date from them and DIVX was later written off. I know that Ciruit City did this.

The other is that PROSCAN End Of Lifed this model and is coming out with the same model sans DIVX for something like $449. That's what the salesman told me, anyway.

Either way, this model seems like a pretty good deal for the price.
