Will DVD Player Resize Image To Fill TV Screen?

Using Mozilla/4.04 [en]C-PBI-NC404 (Win95; U):

I thought I saw reading somewhere on the net(maybe this forum, I can't remember) that you can command your DVD player to
resize(digitally expand in the vertical dimension) the image so that you don't have the theatre-size aspect ratio anymore, and the black areas on your TV screen dissappear.

Can this be done? What do they call this process?
