Will DVD player have to recognise an EX signal?

No, your DVD player will not have to be upgraded to be able to output an EX soundtrack. I suspect that the very reason that it is matrixed is to ensure backward compatibility with non-EX receivers, as all that will be required is a DPL style decoder to separate out the rear center from the discrete rears.

I still cannot see what the added benefit of ES will be in the home theatre environment, where most surround speakers are close enough together not to leave a "hole" between them that needs to be filled by a rear center. In the theater it's a different story.

Of course those of us with Lexicon processors have had the capabiliy to enjoy discrete, full range 7 channel sound for some time now. ;-)
