component video--different flavors?

Using Mozilla/4.51 [en] (WinNT; U):

1. Sorry if this is covered in a FAQ somewhere, but I cannot find an answer to this. I have a first generation Sony 25XBR (ca. late 1985) that has an RGB input. Is this different from the Y-... components output by current DVD players? I assume so, but would like to know the technical difference.

2. I'm guessing that I'll be in the market for a new TV when I get my new DVD player. Are the component inputs on the newer Toshiba TV's the same as those output by the Sonys and vice versa? Or are there different flavors here, too?
