component video--different flavors?
Posted by Rodent [IP: 24.64.2.36] on July 23, 1999 at 01:31:50 In Reply to: component video--different flavors? posted by Bob Winner on July 22, 1999 at 16:11:27: 1 RGB as found on the older Sony XBR and all professional monitors is exactly the Red, Green and Blue, full bandwidth components of the colour picture as would be generated directly from the studio camera chain. The Y, R-Y and B-Y of component are as follows: Y = the full bandwidth black and white picture as in B&W TV, it is the sum of R+B+G. R-Y and B-Y are the colour difference signals. They are of limited bandwidth, meaning component is not as sharp as RGB. But an approximation of R,G and B can be extracted from them by a simple matrix. Y=R+B+G R= (R-Y) + Y There appears to be no inexpensive box to convert this although very inexpensive circuits in every TV set must do this. 2. Yes the component inputs are the same , they just have different trade names.
