I took a look at this unit extensively over the weekend down south at San Jose Honda TV and Video. I agree with you that the new ID of the unit looks terribly cheaper than the old classy, hi-tech silver matte look. The store there had the new stand to coincide with it and it was still kinda cheesy. I was dissapointed about the lack of the older PNP options in my present XBR200 too. But I did take extensive time to take a look at the newest features, mainly Vertical compression and Wireless headphones. The HEadphones worked pretty neat. But I'm not completely convinced on the Vertical compression technology. It *seems* to look better on anamporphic produced movies, even sharing the exact same 16:9 picture ratio (the XBR200 unit besides the 250 unit was "Stretched"). On standard NTSC broadcasts, it didn't look better IMHO, but maybe because of the set top antenna reception. At any rate, I'll probably get this unit, because supposedly Sony is carefully QC'ing each and every unit that comes out of the factory, just to make sure there were no problems (which the unit I looked had none)..good luck..
