DVD - resolution on 4:3 TV??

Using Mozilla/4.51 [en] (Win95; U):

Unless I'm missing something, there seems to be no way to achieve 400+ lines of picture resolution from a widescreen DVD on an older "standard" (4:3) TV set. Anamorphic releases require the DVD player to eliminate lines, while letterbox releases use available scan lines to produce the black bars top and bottom.

It seems that the only way to get the superior resolution picture that I bought the DVD player for in the first place is to view 4:3 formated releases.

If I'm missing something here, could someone let me know. I've read several explanations for all this, and it appears that the combination of Widescreen formats and 4:3 TV's doesn't allow any gain in picture quality!
