:Unless I'm missing something, there seems to be no way to achieve 400+ lines of picture resolution from a widescreen DVD on an older "standard" (4:3) TV
set. Anamorphic releases require the DVD player to eliminate lines, while letterbox releases use available scan lines to produce the black bars top and
bottom.

It seems that the only way to get the superior resolution picture that I bought the DVD player for in the first place is to view 4:3 formated releases.

If I'm missing something here, could someone let me know. I've read several explanations for all this, and it appears that the combination of Widescreen
formats and 4:3 TV's doesn't allow any gain in picture quality!:

There are two dimensions to resolution, horizontal and vertical. You can have the full benefit of the horizontal resolution, which gets to ~500 lines of lines per picture height on a normal 4:3 set. DVD also has better color signal to noise ratio, luminance signal to noise ratio and horizontal color resolution than other formats.
For vertical resolution, you won't get any more with DVD than other formats unless the DVD is anamorphic and you have a widescreen display or a 4:3 set with a vertical squeeze option.
But there is more to picture quality than just vertical resolution.
Also note that for 4:3 releases, DVD has no more vertical resolution than any other format, regardless of whether you have a widescreen set or not.
