HDTV Screen Ratio Question

Using Mozilla/4.5 (Macintosh; I; PPC):

This may sound like a dumb question, but I have not been able to get a satisfactory answer in my trips to the local electronics stores.

If I buy a television with a 4:3 aspect ratio now, and later add an HDTV converter box, will the HDTV picture appear in letterbox form on my 4:3 television?

I've been told by some that it will be full screen, but it seems to me that the sides of the picture will have to be truncated to make it so. I'm trying to decide whether or not to replace my 12 year old Sony with a new XBR250 or to wait another year or two.
