You need a VCR with NTSC playback - many of the VCRs sold in the UK have this capability. It's not the same as a NTSC-to-PAL standards conversion - the VCR engineers found they could fool most (but not all) PAL TVs into displaying a "quasi-PAL" video signal and this is what the VCRs output. So you need to check your VCR to see if it has this capability. If it does, your TV will probably display it - but the VCR isn't outputting NTSC and it's not really PAL either!!
