i'm not sure if dish networks is still having their rebate promotion - basically you sign up for either $39 or $49/month for a year and get back $100 or $200, respectively.
dish also allows a more flexible choice of programming (they have little packages vs direct's cumulative packages)

having said that, i have directTV. i'm afraid that going with dish may have been cheaper, but i don't have any first hand knowledge on their signal quality. i am very happy with direct's picture and reception, although since they acquired primestar, their customer service is lacking.

your best bet might be to get the dish from onsale.com ($50 or less with shipping) and then pay a local installer to put it in (around $100).
