The blunt truth of the matter is, a/v gear of any kind is not an 'investment', it is lost money, period. To constantly wait or be in fear of the next big thing rendering your current a/v purchase obselete is pointless. The only certain thing is that you are depriving yourself of the best technology has to offer now. The fact of the matter is, formats will have shorter lifespans. As A/V technology is now entering the digital domain, 'the curve is steepening'. DVD in it's current iteration will be replaced by a shorter wavelength laser based disc aka HD-DVD. But this is at least five years out, if not ten before consumer gear and software becomes available. In the meanwhile you have DVD, which currently i wouldn't classify as unstable at all. Close to 3 million players shipped in two years and pushing several 'k' titles. Plus current DVD is capable of progessive scan images which will provide a second higher resolution life to the format that bridges the gap between DVD and HD-DVD. Am i glad i bought into Laserdisc for 10 years before DVD? Hell yes. Am i bummed out because now i am buying into DVD and my poor laser's are a dying format? Hell no, see there's that decade of A/V nirvana that laser provided. Will i be upset when HD-DVD displaces DVD inevitably? Hell no. Will i rebuy all the faves and classics on HD-DVD, hell yeah! It's all about the movies. So my suggestion is this, buy a DVD player. DVD players are quite reasonably priced now and deals on software abound, esp. online. You will get at least 5-10 yrs out of format, also any future HD-DVD player will be backwards compatible with DVD software.
