If the component input is RGB then yes it will work. Some sets have, in addition to component (Y, R-Y, B-Y) inputs, a 15-pin D-Sub input (same as a computer monitor) to receive a RGB signal. The cable you may have seen is probably simply mapping the RGB + sync on green signal into three separate RCA cables. This will work provided the signal is RGB. The minimum resolution required for such a connection is 640x480. Most direct view sets that have this capability use the above resolution.
