Good reply! I couldn't agree with you more about A/V equipment not being an investment, but rather lost money. Afterall, none of this kind of equipment is a necessity for life--unless you're in the "business" I suppose.

Nevertheless, it would be somewhat foolish to buy anything today that is expected to be replaced in the very near future, e.g., already on its way out the door. There is a double "whammee" when a person is aware that no matter which brand and features are choosen, all units will come with one performance issue or another. In this instance, different problems seem to be reported for every make and model of DVD player on the market.

However, if I'm interpreting your message correctly, it appears that today's DVD technology is not going "out the door" anytime soon. While 5-10 years is nothing in comparison to the longevity of the VCR, at least today's player will not become obsolete in the next few years, so its not money gone immediately down the drain. More important is the fact that any future HD/DVD technology will be backwards compatible with today's DVD software (if not for this, I'd just stick with my VCR's for as long as they keep on playing!). Please understand that when it comes to technology, I like to be current with the newest and greatest, but I prefer to build/upgrade rather than skip and jump from one thing to next, and I for one am not too open minded about being forced as a consumer to keep replacing my software merely because of continuously changed formats.

Anyway, thanks again for your reply, and please let me know if you think I've misunderstood any part of your response.

Jason
