Well you're pretty safe with DVD. It is not on the way out, nor any time soon. The truth is that it is on the verge of exploding as player and software sales numbers are increasing drastically this year. As equipment continually gets moved this also effects the format longevity, as 'market entrenchment' provides stability. As i mentioned, since A/V storage/playback technology is entering the digital domain, the longevity of formats will be shorter. As someone else mentioned below, the 20yr lifetimes of VHS or Laserdisc are gone. Buying laserdisc now would be an example of getting into a format while it's on the downward slide. But, there are arguments the other way as well.... laserdisc hardware, even very good equipt, is very cheap now, and software prices are dirt cheap with a huge catalog.Your worries about 'performance issues' are largely unfounded i think. We're into fourth and fifth generation hardware iterations now, and the bugs have been ironed out. I find personally that a lot of the flag waving over this or that player or software glitch is blown way out of proportion and often attributible to user error. Misinformation abounds on the internet! I personally would say cleaning your VCR would be far more of a hassle than any 'problem' with DVD technology. Good luck with your decision.
