Dish Network. Definitely...

* lower prices
* better equipment for less
* better customer service
* (recently) as good or better picture and sound quality
* free (and useful) automatic software upgrades
* more local programming
* superstations
* more international channels

The only reason for getting DirecTV right now, in my opinion, would be being a sports nut. Otherwise, the choice should be a no brainer.

In terms of equipment, most Dish Network equipment packages can be had for free after rebate (except the most expensive ones). Their newest receiver with a hard-drive-based pause feature and WebTV functionality (the DISHplayer) can be had for $50 from retailers. (Highly recommended.) If I were you, I would study the package and standalone prices of each receiver model carefully to find out which combination of units purchased in what way would give you the two receivers you want for the least total money. Feel free to e-mail me if you need help with the details.

As for upcoming functionality that you may consider waiting for, the only significant thing that appears on the horizon is HDTV broadcasts. Dish Network's receiver model 5000 is reportedly going to be upgradable for HDTV reception via a $300 adapter. They haven't announced any new receiver with built-in HDTV capabilities yet. If you aren't serious about getting into HDTV yet, you don't need to worry about any other upcoming functionality that would be worth waiting for.
