Like most people,I use my VCR to record stuff and my DVD player to enjoy the most awesome possible movie playback.Get both and be happy.DVD is not going anywhere for a long time.It has already defeated two previous Playback formats(Laserdisc and DIVX).I need both SVHS and DVD until a Set-top DVD recorder becomes available,which I am not holding my breath for.
