: It has already defeated two previous Playback formats(Laserdisc and DIVX).

Not exactly correct. DVD is ** REPLACING ** the "aging King of the Hill" (which is STILL VASTLY SUPERIOR to broadcast TV and VHS/Beta)! May Laserdisc enjoy its' retirement... :)

"DIVX" was a COMPETING DVD format that, in the first place, should NEVER HAVE BEEN INVENTED! while the initial concept ($5 platters) was valid, the actual IMPLEMENTATION is what ultimately killed it (i.e. "Pay per view" DVD). Right now, Circuit City is "practically giving away" DIVX discs for NINETY-NINE (99) CENTS each since officially "killing" the format 2 months ago.

As for an OPTICAL recorder: I sincerely doubt we'll see one that's commercially practical for at least TEN YEARS. Until optical recording technologies can meet the speed/convenience/PRICE of "traditional" magnetic technologies, we'll see VHS remaining "the king" of home RECORDING. :)
