How to deaden the flyback transformer (Wega)

Posted by David [IP: 128.103.96.27] on September 24, 1999 at 10:38:11
Using Mozilla/4.5 (Macintosh; I; PPC):

I am the proud (i.e., lucky) owner of a non-defective Sony Wega and am wondering if anyone has a good way to eliminate or at least deaden the high pitched squeal of the flyback transformer. It is NOT louder than any other 36" flyback transformer TV (I did a comparison at a local Tweeters) but it is still loud enough in my hardwood floored family room with smooth cathedral ceilings to be grating (esp. to female ears, which I have heard are more sensitive to high frequencies).

My own homemade fix was to get a large piece of 4" thick foam rubber, wrap the foam all the way around the TV (a semicircular cylinder), and add a small piece to cover the top. The results are fantastic; almost no noise can be heard... however:

1) I'm worried about the heat build-up, although I have checked the TV after 10 hours of continuous ontime and nowhere on the outside of the TV was it hot to the touch.

2) My solution doesn't do the aesthetics of the Wega any justice (i.e., it's ugly).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
David
