I asked this same question in a below thread - you might want to read it (link below), it had some good info.

I wound up buying the Reciever with the decoders built in and buying a DVD that did not have the decoders. I bought the Yamaha RX-V995 reciever with the Panasonic A120 DVD player. I'm extremely happy with both pieces of equipment. It sounds and looks great. There is a review article on the Pansonic A120 DVD off the SMR main page. You may want to check that out.
