DVD vs Receiver digital decoding
Posted by Ken Simmons [IP: 216.161.243.9] on September 30, 1999 at 21:10:09 In Reply to: DVD vs Receiver digital decoding posted by Mike Aylward on September 30, 1999 at 17:28:32: If you get a deck with built-in DD decoder (i.e. 6 RCA output jacks), then connect the outputs to your receiver's "Ext 6-ch input" (or similar), the DVD will do all the processing AND your receiver's DD decoder can be used for another DD source. This, of course, requires SIX INTERCONNECT CABLES (or eight if you connect the "analog" L/R outputs too) 'tween the deck and the receiver AND your receiver's "external" inputs can't be used for, say, an external DTS processor. However, if you get a "regular" DVD deck, you only need ONE interconnect (RCA coax or Toslink optical) to the receiver's DD decoder (or three, again if you want to connect the analog L/R's too), leavng your "external" inputs available for "something else" (i.e. DTS decoder). Finally, DVD's with built-in decoders (i.e. panasonic A320) are MORE EXPENSIVE than "basic" decks (i.e. Panasonic A120). Unless your receiver is "low-end", I sincerely doubt you'll hear any difference 'tween the receiver's DD decoder and the deck's DD decoder. Hope this helps. :) Ken
