Question about Sony's DRC and the 53XBR300

Posted by Bill Pederson [IP: 192.9.25.22] on October 18, 1999 at 16:25:49
Using Mozilla/4.51 [en] (X11; U; SunOS 5.7 sun4u):

Sony's DRC converts 480i to 960i, whereas other systems convert 480i to 480p.

Is there a significant visual advantage to Sony's method or is this just another bit of marketing hype? 80% of my viewing will be with standard broadcast material, with most of the remainder being DVD. HDTV would be nice, but it's not a high priority for me right now.

Also, has Sony gotten past its reported quality woes? I'm looking at the 53XBR300 and don't relish carting a system back and forth.

One more: is the 53XBR300 16:9 or 4:3? The press announcement didn't say, so I'm assuming it's the latter. Too bad, because I want 16:9.
