Receiver or DVD player?? big decision!

Using Mozilla/4.7 [en] (Win95; I):

Hey all. I have come down to this decision and would like a little info if at all possible. As of right now my HT is non-existent. I have a 19inch samsung tv with no input except RF and a Sony hi-fi VCR that has audio outs. I have about $500 to spend and not sure which i should get. The DVD players i have been looking at are the Toshiba 3109 or 5109(progressive scan). But i am not sure if it would be more beneficial to get the Player or the receiver. I plan on upgrading my TV next spring to a Widescreen tv. Any help or info would would help me make a decision. thanks so much in advance.
