Definitely prefer the receiver. Your TV is not a model where you could reap the benefit of the higher resolution of the DVD picture. In fact, you couldn't even connect it to your TV through an RF video connection; you would need a modulator to do that. Besides, even if you could, which one is better: watching a DVD with not-much-better-than-VHS picture as it appears on your 19" screen with two-channel-only sound coming through your TV's tinny speakers (which, I assume, is what you are listening through), or to listen to booming multichannel home theater sound on hi-fi VHS tapes with a picture quality not very noticeably worse on your 19" than what you would get from a DVD?

Postpone your DVD player purchase to when you plan to purchase your widescreen TV. You will find better DVD players on the market for lower prices at that time anyway. (The same progress in receivers is more incremental.)

Of course, all of this assumes that you will be able to afford a set of five speakers together with the receiver for that $500. Otherwise, a receiver with no speakers is *much less* use without any speakers (i.e., absolutely not more useful than a paperweight) compared with a DVD player connected to your 19" TV (which would at least "do something").
