It is well publicized that a certain generation of Panasonic DVD players have mechanical problems. The tracking mechanism loses accuracy after a moderate period of use (in my case, a year). The symptoms are increasing numbers of mistracked disks, pixellations, and lock-ups, and increased sensitivity to dust and scratches. Your explanations sound suspiciously similar to these.

My A110 experienced this problem too. I handed it in for authorized repair literally two days before the end of the warranty period. Now it is once again functioning flawlessly after the fix. Unfortunately, the problem has nothing to do with the firmware. (I'm not saying there is no firmware problem. But this is something that is independent of that.)
