Ken is right. DVDs employ a blue laser as opposed to the red laser used by CD players. The "darker" color of the laser makes it more sensitive to the reflectivity of the surface that it reads. That's why some DVD player manufacturers produce models with dual lasers; a blue laser to read DVDs, and a red laser to read CDs and CD-Rs.
