If all you have is $500 and you absolutely wanted to purchase something now, I would have to recommend the DVD player. The price of a decent receiver and the speakers to go with it would push you past your price point. It would seem like a waste to get something now which you couldn't effectively use next year. However, for $500, you can definitely get a good DVD player that you can use for a while, as you upgrade and add components.
