: wait a second... are you saying that when you have a digital input selected, you can only be in dolby digital or dolby pro-logic?

That is correct. However, I have to CLARIFY: if the DVD deck is used to ** play a CD **, what I typed DOES NOT APPLY - you can use ANY AND ALL audio "modes" with a digital feed.

What I typed ONLY APPLIES ** WITH VIDEO DVDs **! use the DIGITAL feed with a VIDEO, and you only get:

* STEREO or PRO LOGIC selections with a NON-DD BITSTREAM (i.e. "standard" stereo, stereo with Surround, or mono). The "PRO LOGIC" annunciator lights up on the front panel ("DOLBY DIGITAL" is off) when you press the "DOLBY SURROUND" button on the front and goes out when you hit "STEREO".
* STEREO or DOLBY DIGITAL selections with a "true" Dolby Digital (5.1) bitstream. The "DOLBY DIGITAL" annunciator lights up on the front panel ("PRO LOGIC" is off) when you press the "DOLBY SURROUND" button on the front and goes out when you hit "STEREO".

Use the ANALOG feed with both "types" of VIDEO DVDs and you can "get everything".

: something seems fishy here...

In that, you're correct. I didn't recently have any "cod liver oil", so my synapses weren't "firing correctly". I apologize for 1) the MISUNDERSTANDING and 2) the INCOMPLETE explanation (snifl!).

Ken

P.S. to all "lurkers": the "details" above apply to DENON DOLBY DIGITAL RECEIVERS as Ian and I have Denon units (mine is an AVR-3200; I'm not sure what model Ian has. :) ). In fact, anyone with DIFFERENT MAKE DD receivers is free to "add their experience" with their receivers' behavior using the digital bitstream feed with different video DVDs. We'd appreciate the information... :)
